Android Opera – MIRROR | Theatre du Chatelet, Paris

2023

Keiichiro Shibuya’s android opera “MIRROR”, staged at the Châtelet in Paris from Wednesday, 21 June 2023, was a resounding success. The android opera “MIRROR”, featuring the android Alter 4 at its core, was a blend of Shibuya’s piano and electronic compositions, the 47-piece orchestra Appassionato, chants from five Koyasan monks, and visuals by artist Justine Emard, a long-time collaborator of Shibuya. This intricate fusion of human and AI-generated music was both complex and exquisite. The Châtelet, Paris’s oldest theatre, was awash with a mix of unease, tension, and occasional confusion. Yet, by the end, there was an undeniable sense of jubilation, echoing Alter 4’s proclamation, “Let’s celebrate this new experience together.”
