ATAK Presents: “A Deep Dive into Android Opera”
Rethinking Philosophy, Science, and Art in the Age of AI
Keiichiro Shibuya’s Android Opera has toured the world — from Tokyo to France, Dubai, Sharjah, Germany, and Australia — evolving with each performance. Its culmination, MIRROR, was staged last year at Yebisu Garden Hall in Tokyo. The performance, praised for its overwhelming density of information and artistic precision, brought together orchestra, Buddhist chant, and electronics in a masterful synthesis that continued to resonate long after the curtain fell.
Yet despite its scale and complexity, much about this opera remains unexplored. Its vast layers of meaning and context have yet to be fully unraveled.
Now, on November 5 at Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Shibuya will present MIRROR – Deconstruction and Rebirth, a bold attempt to dismantle and reconstruct his own work. At the heart of this new performance is the debut of the latest humanoid android, “Maria” — modeled after Shibuya’s late wife, and equipped with advanced AI and full-body motors. Singing and speaking alongside Shibuya and a live orchestra, Maria introduces a profound new chapter in the opera’s ongoing exploration of “technology and life and death.”
What exactly is Android Opera? And how can music and art be deconstructed and reborn in our contemporary age? Gathering leading thinkers from philosophy, science, and the arts — across disciplines and generations — this event will dive deep into the opera’s mysteries in an intensive public discussion.
