About Android Opera『MIRROR』

Composed and produced by Keiichiro Shibuya, the Android Opera MIRROR is a groundbreaking work in which an AI-equipped android sings alongside a 60-piece orchestra, piano, electronics, video, and shōmyō—Buddhist chant with a 1,200-year history. Having been staged at Expo 2020 Dubai and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, and selling out instantly at its Tokyo performance last year, the production will finally come to Suntory Hall on Wednesday, November 5. Blurring the boundaries between human and technology, East and West, tradition and innovation, life and death, it offers a vision of a new model of harmony in the performing arts.

A teaser video, newly created for this occasion and incorporating AI-generated animation, has also been released today.

Highlights of this performance

<The Latest Humanoid Robot “Android Maria” Makes Her Stage Debut>

First unveiled this past June at PRADA MODE OSAKA, Android Maria will take the stage for the very first time. Modeled after Shibuya’s late beloved wife, Maria, the android embodies his consistent theme since THE END: “death is not singular.” The concept design and conversational program were developed by artist Yuma Kishi using AI. The project also brings together longtime collaborators such as computer music composer Shintaro Imai, who has overseen android programming in recent Android Operas, and University of Tokyo professor Takashi Ikegami, alongside a team of skilled engineers including Reo Matsumura. Development is still ongoing, and for this performance, Maria will showcase not only her stage debut but also vocals and movements enhanced through deepened AI learning, as well as real-time interaction powered by AI.

<Concept: “Deconstruction and Rebirth”>

Under the title “Deconstruction and Rebirth,” this production not only introduces a new work but also deconstructs and reconfigures past pieces, while questioning the very boundary between life and death. It is an attempt to seek new hope and possibilities between human and android through the processes of dismantling and regeneration. Another major highlight is the vivid collaboration between the android, electronics, and a newly arranged orchestral score performed by a brilliant young ensemble led by violinist Tatsuki Narita.

<A Performance That Engages the Entire Hall>

In this performance, the experience extends beyond the stage itself: musicians and shōmyō (Buddhist chant) singers will also be placed among the audience, transforming the entire hall into a resonant instrument and creating a three-dimensional musical experience. Sound design is handled by ZAK, one of Japan’s leading engineers and artists, whose finely crafted mix makes full use of Suntory Hall’s unique acoustic space through a meticulously designed speaker layout. A large screen will also be installed above the stage, with visual direction by Justine Emard, the visual artist who served as Artistic Director of the French Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
